The 5 Best Dog Bike Trailers of 2019

When most people think of using a dog bike trailer, they think of a dog who isn’t as mobile as they used to be. But, the reality is, there are a number of uses for a bike pet trailer:

  • They are superb for taking dogs on long hikes who can’t tolerate the exercise (i.e. brachycephalic breeds)
  • They are great for puppies who can’t exercise excessively yet
  • They are a great help for older or less mobile pets
  • They can also be great for dogs in recovery

If you want to safely bring Fido along with you on your next bike ride, then there are a number of considerations:

  1. Weight limit and size of the trailer
  2. Trailer designer (e.g. 2-in-1, folding or fixed)
  3. Durability of the hitch
  4. Safety features (e.g. harness, reflectors, suspension and flags)

We have reviewed the five best dog bike trailers, so we can share with you: our buyer’s guide, how-to train your dog to safely travel in one and what to look for when buying a dog trailer.

What To Look For When Buying A Dog Bike Trailer

When looking for the best dog bike trailer, there are certain things you should be aware of for both the performance and safety of the trailer.

Not only do you want to ensure it’s safe for your dog, but, you also need to consider how the design provides comfort and speed.

We’ve got our top five tips on what to look for when buying bike trailers for dogs.

1. Start With The Size

The trailer you choose needs to be big enough for Fido.

He should have ample room to move around in, even though he should be attached to a harness. He should easily be able to readjust himself if necessary.

2. Make Sure You Don’t Exceed The Weight Limit

Check the weight limit on the trailer you are considering.

Even if your pooch is small, you may be planning to take other gear out on your trips so make sure your trailer can safely transport the total weight.

Consider how the weight of the trailer (and dog) will change how you ride your bike. A heavy trailer will be harder to tow. Be realistic about your fitness level and whether you can safely tow your large breed pooch behind you.

3. Storing the Trailer

Consider how you will store and transport the trailer, especially if it’s a large dog bike trailer.

If you don’t plan to use it all that often, you want one that will neatly fold away – so look for a folding design.

Equally, if you are planning on taking the trailer on your travels, you would be better suited to a lightweight design with quick release wheels.

4. Check The Hitch Is Compatible

Before you attach the trailer, check the durability of the hitch (this is the connection between the bike and the trailer).

Check it is compatible with your bike.

A poor hitch connection can become undone over rough terrain and can make the ride uncomfortable and harder work than it needs to be.

5. What Safety Features Are Included?

If you will be spending time on or around roads you may want to consider reflective stripes or safety flags on your trailer.

All trailers should include an internal leash hook or internal leash.

Manufacturers will offer a speed limit on what the trailer can safely travel and corner at, be mindful of this limit and ride within it.

Trailers are safe to use, when done so in their intended manner.

Some More Advice

When choosing the right trailer for you, consider the design. Do you want a trailer than can double up as a stroller? So rather than towing it, you can use a conversion kit and push it like a stroller.

If you are lacking storage space, do you want a trailer than will easily fold up when not in use?

Do you need a trailer that will shield from the sun or rain?

Does it need mesh to protect from those pesky bugs on your evening stroll?

Think about these factors before purchasing a bike pet trailer.

Training Your Dog to Use a Dog Trailer: A Step By Step Guide

Training Your Dog to Use a Dog Trailer

When you first purchase your dog bike trailer, you may be some way off your first ride into the sunset.

1. Set-Up The Trailer

Set up your trailer and just leave it for your dog to explore and sniff.

Leave it stationary and throw some treats in the general direction of the trailer. You want your dog to associate the trailer with good things happening.

2. Attach The Trailer

Next, attach the trailer to your bike and again, let your dog explore and sniff it again.

Throw treats and praise him for being around or near the bike and trailer.

Walk the bike around with the trailer attached and just let Fido figure it out.

You want Fido to be interested, but indifferent.

If he starts lunging at the bike/trailer or trying to run away, you need to go back to basics and start introducing him from a distance with plenty of praise and rewards.

3. Walk Fido Next To The Moving Bike & Trailer

Providing Fido is accepting the trailer and bike, ask a helper to come out for a ride with you.

You ride your bike with the trailer attached and ask your helper to walk beside you with Fido securely on a short leash.

Ask the helper to praise and reward Fido for being around the bike.

4. Let Fido Into The Trailer

After a successful walk, back home, open the trailer and let Fido sniff inside, encourage him in with treats or a chew.

Again, you want him to associate the trailer with good things.

Providing Fido accepts being in the trailer stationary, you may finally be ready to hit the road.

5. Take Fido For A Spin!

A Dog Being Towed in a Pet Bike Trailer

Secure Fido in the harness or attach him to the internal leash of the trailer and check your hitch is secure.

Start off slowly, expect some movement from Fido, but if you are going steady it shouldn’t unbalance you (he may just need to find his own balance point for the journey).

Praise Fido throughout, providing he is settling into the journey well.

Any signs that he isn’t coping, stop the bike, and consider whether you need to walk the bike home with Fido still in the trailer or even remove Fido from the trailer.

Once Fido is used to travelling in the trailer, head out for short journeys, maybe 10-15 minutes. If you are confident he is coping with these journeys, you can slowly increase the journey length.

Tips for Longer Rides:

  • If you intend to ride off-road or on uneven terrain, you should ideally go through the introductory phase again
  • If you intend to head out for long rides, make sure you stop regularly for toilet breaks for Fido and give him a drink of water
  • Ride the bike and attached trailer in line with the manufacturers safety guidelines and always stick to the speed limit of any given trailer

A necessary note to add, consider the temperament of your dog and whether they are suited to a trailer. If you have a reactive dog out on walks, is he also going to be reactive in a trailer?

Him barking and lunging at people or other dogs whilst out poses a huge safety issue for both you and him.
