Are Great Pyrenees Intelligent Dogs?

Yes, great Pyrenees are intelligent dogs. As they were originally bred to guard livestock, they’re able to think independently and make their own decisions about how to react to situations.

However, they don’t score particularly well in canine intelligence tests, ranking only #70 out of 137 breeds. These tests focus on how quickly a dog will learn to respond to a new command, and how often it will obey a known command.

As great Pyrenees are indifferent to this type of training and refuse to understand or obey unless they can see a good reason for doing so, they can be difficult for inexperienced owners to train. Early socialization and group training will help a great Pyrenees puppy understand how you want it to behave, and also provide opportunities for it to show how smart it really is.
