Yes, shih tzus are high maintenance.
Their coats grow quickly so they need to be groomed every six weeks or so (at a typical cost of $60 per visit to the groomer or $600 per year).
Shih tzus need human companionship to be happy and don’t do well when they’re left alone for long periods. To prevent them from developing separation anxiety or other behavioral problems which are symptoms of distress, you’ll need to be with them most of the time.
They can’t tolerate extreme temperatures, so in very cold or very hot climates they are susceptible to several health problems, including heatstroke, which can be fatal.
Shih tzus are also more prone to ear infections and eye problems than many other breeds. Care must be taken to prevent deafness and eye damage.
So, despite its small size and its charming and loyal nature, if you’re looking for a low- maintenance pet that will thrive without much attention, a shih tzu is not the best choice.
