How Was the American Pit Bull Terrier Originally Bred?

The American pit bull terrier was originally bred from English bulldogs and terriers to create a dog that was strong enough to fight bulls and bears. By the 1800s these sports were banned, but pit bull terriers are still sometimes used in illegal dog fights.

The breed gradually became popular as a working dog on farms, where its strength and agility meant it could help to herd cattle. Its naturally friendly and loyal nature also helped it become accepted as a family dog.
