Is the Belgian Malinois Related to the German Shepherd?

Yes, the Belgian Malinois is related to the German shepherd. Along with the Dutch shepherd, the Belgian Malinois comes from the same ancestor and they are all members of the herding group of dogs. However, these breeds became distinct from one another around 1890.

Although their appearance is similar to that of a German shepherd, Belgian Malinois are typically slightly smaller and lighter. They also have more of a boxy shape than the longer body of a German shepherd. Belgian Malinois also have smaller, triangular ears.

In terms of personality, both of these breeds are energetic, intelligent, and inquisitive. In addition, both breeds retain their powerful desire to work and their intense loyalty toward their owners.
