What does shih tzu mean?

The shih tzu’s original name in Chinese meant lion dog.

It’s believed that the name was originally given to these dogs because, according to the myth, the Tibetan Buddhist God of Learning always traveled with a small lion dog that would morph into a full-sized lion whenever the need arose.

An alternative explanation for the origin of the name in China is that Buddha was to have ridden to Earth on the back of a lion.

They are also sometimes known as “chrysanthemum-faced dogs” because their fur grows in all directions on their faces like the sprouting of flower petals.
