What is the rarest dog breed?

The rarest dog breed is the English Foxhound, based on AKC registration. These dogs are still mainly bred for hunting and are rarely found as house pets.

Worldwide, other rare dog breeds include:

  • Otterhounds. Fewer than 800 of this breed exist today. Although they make excellent family pets, only 4-7 litters are bred in the US each year.
  • Xoloitzcuintli. For obvious reasons, this small breed is more commonly known as the ‘Mexican Hairless’. Intelligent dogs, their history dates back more than 3000 years.
  • Norwegian lundehund. These rare 6-toed dogs were originally bred to hunt puffins. There are now thought to be fewer than 2000 worldwide.
