Yes, border collies are high maintenance. Originally bred as a tough working dog with incredible stamina, they need a minimum of two 45 minute walks per day. This is in addition to plenty of outdoor activities which allow them to run around, chase toys, or even jog along beside you while riding your bike.
In addition, they need constant mental stimulation and challenge. So if you’re looking for a relaxed dog that will sleep most of the day and doesn’t need a lot of attention, a border collie is not the breed for you.
In terms of grooming, border collies are moderate shedders and need brushing a few times each week to remove loose hair. A bath every six to eight weeks, or as required, is enough to keep their coat healthy and glossy.
