Cane corsos come from Italy.
Although the breed originated in ancient Greece for herding and guarding, they were later imported into Italy by the Romans, who took them into battle.
Their name derives from canis, meaning dog in Latin, and cohors, meaning military guard. Today the breed is often known as the cane corso Italiano.
