Why Are American Pit Bull Terriers so Mouthy?

American pit bull terriers are so mouthy because historically they were prized as farm dogs and used their mouths to control cattle.

Being mouthy means they tend to nip, bite or chew their human companions without any intention of hurting them. While this is natural behavior in all puppies, they should grow out of it.

To help your American pit bull terrier learn that it’s not good to bite humans, you will need strict training.

  • If it bites you, end the game immediately.
  • Provide plenty of tough, chewable toys for it to enjoy
  • Provide tugging toys to exercise its jaw and neck muscles
  • Give it KONG-style puzzles which provide the challenge of extracting treats
  • Play throw and fetch games which provide full body exercise and allow it to burn off surplus energy
