Why do chow chows have purple tongues?

Why chow chows have purple tongues is a mystery. To date, scientists haven’t been able to come up with a definitive explanation.

They’re born with pink tongues, like other breeds, but develop darker pigmentation which turns the tongue blue, purple, or black as they mature. But no one knows for sure why this is.

However, there are some charming legends about how chow chows got their unique blue/purple tongues. One is that they inherited them from bears. Another is that when the stars were created, little pieces of the blue sky fell down to earth – and chow chows promptly licked them up, changing their tongue color forever.
